  • Outside bets offer high winning odds but low payouts.
  • Inside bets feature low winning odds with high payout rates.
  • Call bets are only available in French and European roulette.
  • The Full Complete is a suitable bet type for players with higher bet limits.
  • Different roulette types have varying winning odds and payouts.

Placing a roulette bet is a straightforward process, but it requires you to understand the different types of roulette betting options. The two main bet types whilst playing roulette are Outside and Inside bets.

Furthermore, there are other available betting options you can wager on, including Call bets, Final, Full Complete, and Imprisonment bets.

Online roulette bet types have different winning odds and payout rates. Outside bets will often give you a lower return on your wager, but your chances of winning are higher. On the other hand, if you place your chips on inside bets, it gives you a higher payout, but they are riskier and the odds of winning are lower.

In this guide, you will discover the various roulette bet options and how to practice them. More importantly, you will be able to play roulette and understand the game!

Roulette Bet Types

Outside and inside bets are the most common roulette betting options. However, there are other bet variants, some only applicable to French/European roulette, and others are suitable if you're an advanced player. These include roulette Call bets, Full Complete, and Imprisonment bets.

Roulette Inside Bets

Inside bets have the highest category of roulette bet types, and all wagers are placed on the inside of the roulette table’s layout. There are six types of inside bets that you can place, ranging from a single number bet (Straight Up) to a Snake Bet. The latter involves you to stake on 12 numbers in a snake-like pattern. Since the bets are more specific, inside bets are riskier than outside bets. Thus, the winning odds are lower, but you can expect higher payouts.

Straight Up: This bet gives you only a 3% possibility of winning. To win, you must place your chips on a single number anywhere on the inside of the table, and if the ball lands on the correct number you picked, you will be rewarded with 35x your stake.

Split: Unlike the straight up bet, the split option allows you to wager on two adjacent numbers. As the name suggests, your bet is split between two numbers sitting next to each other, e.g. 4/5 or 31/32. The roulette payout is 17:1 and the odds of winning is around 5%.

Street: Sometimes referred to as ‘trio bets’ or ‘steam bets,’ these inside bets cover a sequence of three numbers. For example 1, 2, 3 or 16,17, 18. The payout rate landing a street bet is 11:1, but the odds vary depending on which roulette type you play. American roulette has odds of 7.89% while European roulette has 8.11%.

Corner: Also known as four-number bets, a corner bet includes four numbers that form a square. In this bet, the ball has to land on one of the four numbers for you to win. The payout rate of this roulette bet type is 8:1, and the winning odds are slightly above 10%.

Line: The line bet, also called ‘six-number bets’, covers two rows of three numbers each. The numbers you choose need to be on two consecutive rows, for example, 1-6, 4-9, or 7-12. The payout is 5x your wager, and the chances of landing a correct bet is around 16.22%.

Five-Number Bet: This roulette bet type is also called a ‘top-line’ or basket bet. It is solely placed on numbers 0, 00, 1, 2, 3. Therefore, the ball must land on one of these numbers for you to win. The bet has a 6:1 payout, and the chances of winning are 13.16%. This bet is only available in American roulette since it features ‘00.’

Snake Bet: A snake bet covers the numbers 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34. When highlighted, these numbers form a snake-like pattern, hence the name. A snake bet allows you to bet on 1/3 of the wheel (12 numbers), giving you a safer bet and a 32.43% chance of winning. On the other hand, the payout odds are reduced to 2:1. It is one of the most exciting and best roulette bets.

Roulette Outside Bets

When you play, roulette outside bets are placed on the perimeter of the roulette table. An outside bet is the practice of betting on a greater amount of numbers rather than a single one. There are 5 different types, including red/black, high/low, and odd/even. These roulette betting options are safer, since they feature higher winning odds than inside bets. However, the payouts are lower.

Red/Black: This is one of the most common, but also the easiest bet type in roulette. You are betting that the winning number will be either red or black. This even money bet has a 1:1 payout rate. While the payouts are less, the roulette odds of these wagers range from 47-49%, depending on the roulette variant.

Even/Odd: In this outside roulette bet, your prediction is based on the ball landing on an even or odd number. Furthermore, this betting option features higher winning odds, almost 50%. Like other even money bets, the payouts are 1:1.

High/Low: It is very simple to place a bet on high/low. High covers numbers from 19-36, whilst Low covers numbers from 1-18. If you win, the payout equals your wager amount (1:1) with the payout rate for this roulette bet type being 47% - 48%.

Column: The roulette table has three columns, and your task is to predict that the winning number will be in one of the three. Each column has 12 numbers and the payouts are double your bet. In addition, this bet has reasonable winning odds of approximately 30%, depending on the roulette variant.

Dozen: Similar to the column option, the dozen bet features three groups of 12 numbers (1-12, 13-24, 25-36). Also, your roulette payouts are double your wager, and the winning odds are slightly above 30% across the main roulette types.

Roulette Call Bets

Often referred to as the ‘French Bets,’ roulette Call bets are only available on European and French tables. You are also likely to find these bets when playing premium online roulette like  Premium European Roulette or Diamond Bet Roulette.

Unlike regular roulette bet types, call bets are wagered on a secondary betting board called the racetrack. This is an oval betting zone that looks like a racing circuit, and features the numbers 1-36 including ‘0’. You have five different bet types, with payouts ranging from 8:1 to 36:1.

Voisins du Zéro (neighbours of zero): Your bet covers 17 numbers closest to the ‘0’ on the roulette wheel. These include 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, and 25.

From the 17 numbers, there are three roulette bet options that are included in the overall payout. These include 3 number bet, Split, and Corner bet.
