In our glossary of craps terms, you will find the commonly used phrases and lingo at the craps table. While you don’t need to memorise every craps table terminology, it helps to familiarise yourself before playing at an online casino.
Aces: Bet that the next roll will have an outcome of a 2 (two ones). Also known as Snake Eyes.
Any Craps: You are betting on the next roll being a 2, 3, or 12.
Any Seven: A bet on the next roll being a 7.
Big Red: Another phrase for placing a bet on any seven.
Black: Craps terminology for the £100 chips, which are black in most casinos.
Bones: Alternative word for dice.
Boxcars: Bet that two sixes (12 in total) will be rolled on the next roll of the dice.
Boxman: The casino’s supervisor whose role is to supervise the game; their decision is the final word.
Box Numbers: Betting on the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10.
Boys or The Boys: Craps terminology for the craps dealers.
Cold Dice: Used to describe the table when the outcomes are producing more 7s than expected.
Colour In: Cashing out smaller valued chips for chips of greater value when leaving the table.
Come bet: A bet similar to the pass-line wager but is made after the come-out roll once the point has been made.
Come-out roll: Refers to the very first roll of the game; all pass and don’t pass bets must be placed before the come-out roll.
Comp: A complimentary service offered by the casino to players with a notable performance at the table. This could range from hotel accommodation to paid-for excursions.
Crap Numbers: Craps slang for numbers 2, 3, and 12.
Craps Check: Casino term for tokens (used instead of money).
Don’t Come bet: A bet after the come-out roll, betting on a 7 before rolling the point.
Don’t Pass bet: You are betting that the come-out roll will be a 12, 3, or 2. Your wager losses if it’s a 7 or 11 and is a push if a 12 (depending on the casino) is rolled.
Double odds: Placing the Odds bet which can be twice your original Pass/Don’t Pass/Come/Don’t Come bet.
Edge: This is the advantage that a casino has on any bet you place.
Eye in the Sky: Craps terminology for surveillance cameras in casinos that monitor the action on the table.
Front Line: Alternative name for the pass line bet.
Garden: A slang term for the field bets.
George: Players who tip huge amounts.
Golden Arm: A player who has rolled the dice for over an hour without losing.
Green: Dealer slang for £25 gaming cheques which are green in most casinos.
Hard Way: A wager on 4, 6, 8, or 10 that wins only if a pair of the same number is rolled. For example, a ‘hard 4’ is obtained when each die shows a 2.
Hi-Lo: A bet that the next roll will result in a 2 or a 12.
Hi-Lo-Yo: You are betting that the next roll will result in a 2, 12, or11.
Hop bet: Betting that the next throw will be a combination of the dice that you call i.e. 2-3, 4-4, 3-5.
Horn bet: Found in the middle of the table and is a One-Roll bet on 2, 3, 11, and 12.
Horn High bet: A bet made in multiples of 5 with one unit on 3 horn numbers (2, 3, &11) and two units on the ‘high’ number (number 12).
Hot Dice or Hot Table: Craps terminology referring to a table where all shooters are playing for a long period of time before sevening out.
Inside Numbers: A bet on numbers 5, 6, 8, 9.
Lay bet: A bet by a wrong-way bettor that a 7 will be rolled before the point numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. You will be required to pay a 5% commission.
Lay-Out: The imprinted surface of a craps table where the bets are marked.
Lay Odds: An additional Odds bet placed on the Don’t Come and Don’t Pass bet. This bet is placed behind the original bet at the table and can be 2x or 3x the original bet.
Little Joe: Craps lingo and terminology for a hard-way 4 (2-2).
Marker: A two-sided black or white plastic disc used for marking which points are on or off on the table. It is also known as a puck.
Mark the Point: The action of the dealer putting the Puck on the layout to indicate the point number.
Midnight: Also known as Any 12, it is Craps terminology for a single roll proposition bet on the 12.
Natural: When a shooter rolls a 7 or 11 at the come-out roll.
Nickel: A chip with a £5 denomination
One Roll Bet: A bet on the outcome of only the next roll of the dice.
Odds Bet: An extra wager made in addition to the Pass/Don’t Pass/Come/Don’t Come bets. This can be 2x or 3x the original bet and does not have a house edge.
Off: Bets that will not be active in the next roll.
Off and On: A statement referring to the way in which the dealer pays out winning Come bets when a new Come bet is the same number as one already positioned.
On: Bets that will be active in the next roll.
Outside Numbers: Craps slang for numbers 4, 5, 9, and 10.
Pass Line Bet: A bet on the come-out roll in which you are betting that the shooter will make the point. The bet wins if the come out is a 7 or 11 but loses with a 2, 3, 12
Pass/ Don’t Pass Bets: A Pass bet is a wager that the dice will pass, and is placed before the come-out roll.
Place bet: A Wager that a place number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) will be rolled before a 7.
Point: This is the number established for the next round when the come-out roll is a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10. The dealer will place the puck on the number rolled.
Proposition Bet: Bets made at the centre of the table and include One-Roll bets and the Hardway bet.
Right Bettor: Players who bet that the shooter will roll a point number and win.
Rack: Craps terminology for part of the table where you place your chips.
Seven Out: A phrase used when the shooter rolls a 7 before making their point, thus losing the pass line bet.
Shooter: The player who rolls the dice
Shooter Point Number: After the come-out roll, the pass line wins on 7 or 11 and loses on 2, 3, or 12. Any other dice total (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) becomes the shooter’s point number.
Snake Eyes: Craps betting slang for rolling two 1s (total of two)
Stickman: The casino’s representative at the craps table who is responsible for returning the dice to the craps shooter and announcing the result of the dice roll.
Toke: A tip given to the dealer.
World Bet: Also called a Whirl, this is five bets wagering that the next throw will be a 2, 3, 7, 11, or 12. It is a combination of bets that includes the horn bet and the any seven bet.
Wrong Bettor: A craps player who bets against the shooter, instead placing a wager on the Don't Pass line. .
Yo or Yo-leven: Craps terminology for the number 11, which helps differentiate it from number 7.
2-Way: Bet One-Roll wager for yourself and the dealers.
3-Way Craps: You are betting on the 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, and 6-6 combinations to be rolled.
